You have won a trip (pretend) for yourself and your family to the state you are doing a report about. The trip includes free airfare and $2,000 in cash, but you are on the hook for everything else. You will need to plan out your one week of travel and try to keep your costs down as you are planning this for your family. Everything over $2,000 comes out of your families pocket. This includes gas, food, admissions to any attractions (museums, amusement park, national parks, etc), and all other expenses. You will need to create a couple of different things for this project. First, you will need to make a copy of spreadsheet template to track your expenses. The template is not complete, you will have to finish building it following the instructions provided in the video clips (on tech links page). After that you will need to make a travel itinerary (in the provided spreadsheet) for the week that begins at the airport where you pick up your rental car. You must pick a rental car for your family and include the cost into your spreadsheet. You must create a daily list of what you will do with your family, this includes meals, travel (miles), and activities for the day. These activities must be linked and noted in your Spreadsheet.
Link to spreadsheet (this will force you to make a copy for your google drive....be sure to rename it with your name and state).
Use this link to search for hotels, restaurants, and activities (you can search directly for the activity if you know the name of where you are going).
GOAL: To see as much of your state as you can while trying not to exceed $5,000 in total expenses.
You must do the following during your travel challenge.
1- Eat 3 meals a day. You must find at least 2 special restaurants that you would like to visit with your family. You will provide a link to the restaurant menu and add a note with estimated bill for your family (this should include what you think everyone would order). These will be added to your spreadsheet. Estimated costs are provided on the spreadsheet for each meal that isn't associated with your 2 special meals. The cost is based on a per person rate so you will need to calculate the cost for your family.
2-You must do SOMETHING each day. Visit a museum, amusement park, sporting event, park, or other travel related activity. No sitting by the hotel pool for this challenge!!! You will need to find the cost for any daily activity. You will provide a link to the activity in the spreadsheet and add notes for the cost. You can add costs for souvenirs if you would like (estimates) but be sure to note what they are and your estimated cost in the note section of your spreadsheet.
3-You can only stay in one city for 3 days (2 nights). Then you must move on to another city in your state. You must return to the city that you arrived in to go back to the airport on your last day (Sunday - Day 7).
4-You must find a hotel to accommodate your family. You will take a screen shot of the quoted price for your room and save it to your google drive. You will embed a link to this (make sure to change the share permissions to anyone with the link) on your spreadsheet.
5- You must pick a rental car that will hold your whole family. You get to pick the car but choose wisely as prices vary. You will look for your car here. You must use the dates of travel listed below when pricing your car rental. Your family must be able to travel in the car of your choice and you will need to make note of the gas mileage (MPG) that your rental gets for your calculations. Take a screenshot of your quoted car rental choice and cost. This must be linked to your spreadsheet. You will create a google map with driving directions for each day of your trip. You will need to create a link for each day in your spreadsheet.
6- The cost of gas is fixed in this exercise at $2.15 gallon. You will need to determine how much gas you have to pay for by calculating how many miles you travel each day and the cost per mile of the rental car that you have picked. Be sure to show your work in the notes. Don't know how to do this???? Good thing you have an incredible resource at your finger tips to help you figure it out because your teacher WILL NOT help out on this one. You can use normal classroom resources to solve a problem that you don't know how to answer. Be sure to try to figure it out yourself first.
7- You will be traveling during the 3rd week in July from Monday to Sunday. Be sure to check hotel and activity rates based on that week of the year. This is also the date you will be using for your car rental.
8- Watch the videos to be sure that you know what you are responsible for and how to do it.
